Y’all, I am happy to share this chicken and waffles recipe in honor of Juneteenth!

If you are unfamiliar with Juneteenth it is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States. Furthermore, June 19, 1865 marks the day when news of emancipation and the Civil War’s end finally reached the last group of slaves in America. General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and announced enslaved people were now free. Also, this very news took two years to reach the last group of the enslaved, too. Since then, Juneteenth has been celebrated across the world as it centers *Black* freedom and liberation. This soul food recipe commemorates African-American foodways.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spread chicken nuggets out on a baking sheet.

Bake nuggets in the preheated oven until hot and crispy, 11 to 13 minutes.

Preheat a waffle iron according to manufacturer's instructions and lightly coat with cooking spray.

Whisk flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda, black pepper, and cayenne pepper together in a bowl. Whisk buttermilk, oil, and eggs together in another bowl. Pour buttermilk mixture into flour mixture and stir until batter is just-combined.

Place 1 chicken nugget in the center of each waffle section on the waffle iron. Cover each nugget with about 1 tablespoon of batter, close the waffle iron, and cook until golden and crisp, about 4 minutes. Repeat with remaining nuggets and batter.

It&rsquos a classic brunch dilemma: savory or sweet? Fortunately, the inspired combination of fried chicken piled on top of waffles means there&rsquos no need to choose.

There&rsquos magic in the rich, fatty salt of fried chicken, tempered by the sugar of maple syrup and a crispy waffle. And there&rsquos satisfaction in having breakfast and dinner at once&mdashno matter the time of day. It&rsquos a recipe that has stood the test of time, spread across the nation, and gotten only more appetizing.

The classic chicken and waffles we know and love can be traced to the late 1930s, when the Wells Supper Club opened in Harlem. The joint drew Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, and Gladys Knight, often looking to refuel after a show. One of the regulars, Herb Hudson, moved to L.A. and opened the now-legendary Roscoe&rsquos House of Chicken and Waffles.

Once your frozen waffles thaw to room temp, add half of your cheese onto one of the waffles.
